These are (some of) the reasons why Pete Carroll’s system works, why he’s a great coach, and why no way in he!! should he be fired.
The game of football is not as brutish as you would think, it’s actually quite a science.
The most important components of the game of US style Professional Football haven’t changed, and will never change
– The quarters will always be 15 minutes
– The number of downs an offense has to either score or get a 1st down is 4
– The offense needs to gain 10 yards from 1st down to 1st down
– The playing field will always be 100 yards and 160 feet in width
– There will always be 11 players on each side of the Line Of Scrimmage.
These factors, and a whole host of others, is why the Running game MUST WORK for the team to be great. This is also why the NFL, specifically, is different than CFB, the CFL, Arena, etc.
The Run game is the best way to control the two most important factors of the game ..that is the actual field (or space) and the clock (time).
Many Super Bowls have been won by crappy QBs, heck Terry Bradshaw won 4 of them. They had an amazing one-two punch (like boxing) with Rocky Bleier and Franco Harris, which is what controlled the game and gave them a great defense.
Sure, the Steelers had great players on their Defense (with the Steel Curtain) but even great players need rest on the sidelines during the game.
That hasn’t changed.
I could go on an on, but you can’t win the big one without a solid running attack.
And this is the single greatest reason why we haven’t been back to the Super Bowl, because the RBs got broke. Injuries are just a part of the game and have very little to do with style of coaching.
Marshawn Lynch was just a very rare, very special breed of a RB (and damn, I miss him *sniff sniff* lol)
